Protect Your Data & the Environment with Our Certified & Transparent Process

Secure & Sustainable Computer Recycling in New England

Computers contain valuable materials and sensitive data. Proper computer recycling is crucial to protect the environment and ensure data security. Data Recycling of New England provides efficient and secure computer recycling services for businesses, schools, and individuals throughout New England. We specialize in sorting, testing, and secure data handling for responsible disposal and potential reuse, recycling approximately 98.5% of the materials we receive.

Our Detailed Computer Recycling Process

Step 1

Initial Hard Drive Removal and Inspection for Reuse:

Upon arrival at our secure facility, whether through our convenient transportation services or customer drop-off our first step after unloading is a thorough inspection. We immediately remove all hard drives and other storage media from each computer. This ensures immediate data security. Computers that, based on a detailed visible inspection of processor and generation, are deemed suitable for potential reuse are logged into our advanced inventory system. The remaining units are then processed for responsible recycling according to our strict environmental and data security protocols.

STEP 2

Advanced Laptop Testing and Inventory (For Reusable Laptops):

Laptops deemed suitable for reuse undergo a rigorous, in-house testing program. This program gathers detailed specifications and performs an additional check to verify the absence of any hard drives or internal storage. Upon successful testing, a QR code is printed, and the laptop is logged into our inventory system for tracking. Laptops that do not have resale value are further sorted by screen condition: good screen or cracked screen. This allows for efficient downstream processing, as good screens retain value and can be repurposed.

STEP 3

Secure Data Erasure and Media Handling:

If our testing identifies additional media, these computers are separated for secure internal erasure. We use NIST-standard data wiping and operating system secure erase methods to ensure complete data removal. For hard drives designated for wiping, they are stored in locked cages until processed. For hard drives designated for shredding, they are shredded immediately upon removal. In cases where immediate shredding is not possible, hard drives are stored in a locked cage within our secure, camera-monitored facility and shredded no later than the next business day. SSDs and M.2 drives are assessed for potential resale if shredding is not required.

STEP 4

Sorting and Palletizing/Boxing:

Following data handling and testing, computers are sorted by type and potential for reuse. Apple products, frequently managed by organizations, often present challenges for removal from management systems. We diligently provide organizations with serial numbers to assist in this process. PCs often arrive BIOS-locked, which increasingly complicates removal and can cause issues with Autopilot and other automated PC deployment software. We meticulously inspect and document these PCs, attempting removal where possible. Desktops and servers, regardless of type, are palletized for efficient transport. Laptops, due to their size and fragility, are carefully placed into gaylord boxes to prevent damage during shipping.

  • Please ensure all Apple devices are unmanaged before sending them to us.
  • Please ensure PCs are clean of BIOS locks, especially when using Autopilot and similar programs.

Step 5

Wholesale Resale and Downstream Processing:

Processed and sorted computers, particularly those that have passed our testing and data erasure protocols, are sold wholesale to resellers and indviduals for reuse. This extends the lifespan of these devices and reduces e-waste. Components like good screens from laptops are made available to our downstream partners for repurposing. Computers that cannot be resold are sent to downstream partners for further testing.

STEP 6

Responsible Downstream Recycling (R2 Vendor Partnerships):

Obsolete or non-repairable computers are sent to our downstream recycling partners. We utilize R2-certified vendors for our non-reuse downstream processing, ensuring environmentally sound material recovery and compliance with industry standards.

Benefits of Computer Recycling:

  • Protecting the Environment: Reduces landfill waste and conserves natural resources.
  • Data Security: Ensures sensitive data is securely destroyed.
  • Compliance: Helps businesses comply with environmental regulations.
  • Asset Recovery: Allows for the reuse and remarketing of working equipment.

Environmental Policy:

Data Recycling of New England is committed to environmentally responsible computer recycling. We strive to minimize our environmental impact by:

  • Recycling approximately 98.5% of the materials we receive.
  • Using responsible downstream recycling partners.
  • Complying with all environmental regulations.

Why Choose Data Recycling of New England?

  • Experienced and Thorough: Although we are not R2 certified, our in-house testing and documentation programs exceed many R2 requirements, ensuring rigorous tracking and data security. We partner with R2-certified vendors for downstream processing.
  • Secure Data Handling: We prioritize the secure handling and destruction of data, with locked cage storage and camera monitoring for sensitive materials.
